Making things a little easier: Battlestar Galactica executive producer David Eick is also one of the executive producers of Bionic Woman. (Also, NBC and SciFi Channel are sister networks, both being owned by NBC Universal.)

"I was so excited about bringing Katee over from Battlestar," Eick told reporters at NBC's summer press tour in July, adding: "She's a pure ensemble player. She really does, I think, bring out the best in the people she's working with, and vice versa."

For the part, Sackhoff, 27, is effusive in praise of 23-year-old Rayn, who takes her first leading role in a series after supporting roles in such British TV series as EastEnders and Jekyll.

"Michelle is really, really as kind as she comes across," Sackhoff says. "That's who she is, just naturally." She adds: "She's so young. And I was trying to remember what I was like when I was 23, and I just started Battlestar. ...I don't know if I could have been the lead in Bionic Woman when I was 22. Like, I was happy to be in an ensemble, where I didn't have to carry the burden of the success of the show. That's a lot of pressure for a young person to handle, and she's handling it gracefully and with a lot of ... happiness and dignity, and she's awesome."

As for Battlestar, at press time Sackhoff was shooting the seventh episode of the fourth season. "And my character is dealing with a little bit of mutiny on her hands. And she is ... siding with some unlikely allies to accomplish her goals," she says mysteriously.

It's all a big mystery, really. At the end of the third season, Starbuck was supposed to be dead, but she suddenly appeared at the very end, flying alongside Apollo (Jamie Bamber) on the way to Eath. Whaaa?

"I believe that it will be a mystery all along," Sackhoff says. " I think it's going to be up to the audience who and what she is. And I think that they'll allow the audience to make their own judgements. Because I still don't know. The way that it has been presented to me, and the way that I'm playing it, is that Kara Thrace is a woman on a mission now. And she's not going to let anything stand in her way. She is acting very human. I don't know what that means."

"I'ts nice", Sackhoff adds. "It's really nice. It's exciting, especially since this is our last year. It's a tremendous opportunity to be able to have a beginning, a middle and an end to a show. And to be able to end it on your terms and not have the rug pulled out from underneath you. ... That's part of why my apprehension was doing Bionic Woman: ... I wanted to give my full attention to Battlestar Galactica in its last season and do it its justice. ...

"I'm just really excited to see what happens. I have no idea. I'm like a little kid in candy store at this point. [Michelle] and I kept saying the other day that we wish we weren't on the show, or wished we could fast-forward it, just so we could find out what was happening. Or be able to watch it as an audience member. Because these episodes are so good. So good. So I'm very, very excited."
